KARL GERSTNER (b. 1930)

Swiss painter, designer and theorist, Gerstner as
a young man was heavily influenced by the Bauhaus school, following the
example of Max Bill, a former Bauhaus student working in Switzerland as
an architect, designer, painter and sculptor. Gerstner first studied typography,
then later began his ongoing obsession with color, forming a close friendship
with the similarly inclined artist Josef Albers. Gerstner has worked in
a variety of media, written numerous theoretical texts and for a time owned
the influential GGK advertising agency, the largest in Switzerland. He has
stated "I'm interested in how colors react on our emotions, our souls.
The reality of color and the conscious experience of its effects is what
I'm after."
