IVAN MESSENGER (1895-1983)


Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Messenger moved to San Diego County in 1917 and worked at a farm in Lyons Valley east of San Diego. After receiving his M.A. in romance languages from Stanford University in 1921 he taught at Stanford and the University of Texas for a time, eventually returning to San Diego about 1925. He worked in Mexico in 1922 and 1932, and from 1936-37 painted in South America. Becoming a member of the informal group called the San Diego Moderns he exhibited with them in the early 1930s. Besides his work as a painter, Messenger was also a highly skilled and prolific printmaker.
